A Bottle of Wine Helps the Recession Go Down

I cut and chopped up this bar I picked up from a thrift store until it also functioned as a desk. The lower part has an unusual height for a desk, but that's a compromise to keep it working as a bar. The great thing is that putting the alcohol cabinet on top made this piece a staggering 8 1/2 feet tall! What an impressive thing to serve drinks from!


My favorite part is the yellow glass formed from cut and melted glass bottles. I painted it Bear Paint's "Mermaid Lagoon" color. The bottom legs are from Home Depot.

It is such a strange idea that turning 21 is supposedly the confirmation that I am in my early twenties. Without the usual recourse of denial, I'm not that worried about getting old. It just feels wrong. Like, I should not be this age yet. Did something go wrong in the cosmos this year?

Tied Up at the Definition

During the election season, one of the debates used by the "Yes on 8" campaing was that Gay marriage was a threat to marriage because it changed the definition. This caught me up because at the time I couldn't think of a logical counter argument. However, as time progressed, it hit me. Language is an invention used to name things so we can communicate. When the first humans were walking around they discovered strawberries, apples, and pears. All of these were later put in the blanket term - fruit. Yet, there is the huge debate over whether or not tomatoes are fruits because they taste like vegetables. Scientist assure us the classification of tomatoes in the fruit category is correct because what makes something a fruit is that it developed from the plants ovary and that it contains the seed of the plant.



Many people get tripped up over the same gender quality of a gay marriage. But, what should we use to classify things into the category of marriage. Should it be love, commitment, and the many other aspects of such relationships? Vegetables and fruits are too simple to compare to Civil Unions and marriages. However, what's at the heart of the matter is the malleability of our language. At no point did humans ever put a lock on the definitions of the words in our language until now.


Sometimes words have broad meanings to capture every new thing humans come up with. Like the word transportation, it's changed from simply walking on foot to include such things as traveling by ship to traveling to the moon. Even the silverware's trio of a knife, fork, and spoon had to change to include a spork. Why is it then that marriage can't be extended to include same-sex couples for one reason - gender.


Is gender so intrinsic to it's definition? Do all marriages really have to "taste" the same? And wouldn't gay marriages be the fruit and stright marriages the vegetables any way?

Stop Tearing Apart Our Marriages!

I was almost moved to tears when a girl from a family headed by a lesbian couple took the stage and in a heartfelt speech asked why California voters didn't care about protecting her mothers' marriage and her family. This past weekend I went to Fresno to attend the rally against the California Supreme Court decision to uphold Proposition eight.

I'm a southern born boy, so pushing my political views out in the public and demanding things is definately not part of my upbringing. I have to admit I was scared to go to what I was told to be a protest. However, a few good things came out of it. Including the inspiration to finally create this poster I envisioned months ago. I know it might have been more helpful if I had published this poster during the campaign, but I just kept putting it off.

I felt so strange printing out a Yes on 8 sign with my printer, in my room. But, I had to in order to rip up the picture of the family from the original poster so I could scan it. When I was finished, I was so relieved to recycle all the the remnants of the Yes on 8 sign. PHEW! Anyway, I hope you enjoy the message in my poster and that it spreads around the internet. Remember, the children of gay families are suffering as a consequence for Prop 8!
